I was pleased to be apart of Musgrave's annual Keith Hunt Carnival on Sunday the 20th June. This was my Son Daniel's 3rd Keith Hunt, having represented Magic in the 7's and 9's age groups and now Southport in the U11's. This year 5 Clubs were in attendance. Musgrave, Nerang, Robina, Mudgeeraba and of course Southport. This is a unique Carnival as Clubs must send a team in all three age groups. U7, U9 and U11. Teams play 4 matches each with points added together to decide the winning Club.
This year the winning Club was Mudgeeraba but we gave a good account of ourselves. We were the reigning champions but we couldn't reproduce the heroics of last years sides. We were close and if you check the results below ,you can see how close we could have been with a bit of luck.
The U7's had a good carnival and lost 3 games by a single goal. The kids did a great job and loved the chants that we had going in their last match. LOL. The results were a 4-5 loss to Nerang, a 2-3 loss to Musgrave, a 4-5 loss to Mudgeeraba and a 3-1 win over Robina. How close was that. They gave their all and everyone was very proud. Well done Coaches and kids.
The U9's had a great carnival also and won 3 of their matches and lost only 1 match. Their was some talent on show and we were really happy watching them play. They played the game in a great spirit and enjoyed their day enormouslly. The results were a 6-1 thumping of Musgrave, a 3-0 loss to Mudgeeraba, a 1-0 win over a very good Robina side and a 4-0 win over Nerang. Again well done Mai and Andy.
The U11's new their opposition well having played 3 of the 4 sides already this year. We welcomed Dougy from the U10's into our Div 1 squad, as our regular keeper was unable to attend. Doug plays the game with a smile on his face from go to woe and the boys wish to thank you for your efforts. First up we played Robina and played well but an unfortunate own goal meant a 1-0 loss. Next up we were 2-0 down at half time but came back to win 3-2 against Musgrave. Next up was Nerang and a good effort but another close 1-0 loss and finally we had a nil all draw with Mudgeeraba. We were awarded a penalty at the death but the siren sounded before we could take it.
Our players, Coaches and Parents gave a good accout of themselves and did the Club proud. We were vocal in our support, competitive on the pitch and played in the spirit of the game. Other Clubs at times bent the rules, disputed Ref's calls excessively but we, at all times, conducted ourselves with dignity. That means a lot to me personally, so thanks to everyone from the Management and your Committee members.
I'm sure we all left there with many fond memories and here's a few pics that I took of our squads as a keep sake.
Thanks to everyone, especially the Coaches who give their time freely.
Cheers
Steve Batho
