Southport FC Goal Keeping Academy
Paul Jackson is running the Southport FC Goal Keeping Academy. Below are Paul's thoughts on the recently set-up Academy for experienced and aspiring Goal Keepers.
At present there are 4 goal keepers training on Tuesdays from 4.30- 5.30 with Paul and the boys are loving it.
This is available to all Southport players so come along and see Paul if you are interested.
The GK Academy has been put together at the instigation of Robert Steele
The idea is to give our young Keepers a introduction to goalkeeping in a fun and informative way.
GKs are often neglected by coaches of teams, not by design, but a lot of coaches have never played keeper and don't know how to coach such a specialist position (No, shooting practice is not goal keeper training)
My aim is to get our young keepers a good understanding of the basics, footwork and ball handling (these are the Bread and Butter requirements just like a player must master passing and receiving)
This is done with fun games and drills that will develop in diving shot stopping.
On Tuesday the programm ( at Southport's grounds) is aimed at our 9 year olds to about 12 and runs from 4.30 - 5.30pm.
On Wednesday (at Emanuell college) the programm is for 13-youth age (The coaching regime for the age groups is very different as with the older boys we start to develope upper body strength as well as the goal keeping aspects)
